'Radio Codes'
Every city in every county uses some type of radio codes some use the national standard 10- code some cites modify their codes and some fire departments are trying to standardize radio-talk or radio communications, and use "plain English" but here is from the glossary of the Los Angeles City Fire Dept. some additional approved radio terms:
- "A" Assignment-The normal response to a reported structure fire in a single family residence. This assignment consists of two engine companies and one truck company under the direction of a Battalion Chief.
- "B" Assignment-The normal response to a reported structure in a large high density residential or high hazard setting. This assignment consists of three engine companies and two truck companies under the command of a Battalion Chief.
- "CAV" Conditionaly Available for response. See NAV
- "Digicom" A vehicle mounted appliance that transmits unit status and location data to O.C.D.
- "Full Standby" The highest level of response at LAX. This response consists of all apparatus in the immediate area of LAX and on-airport CRASH vehicles.
- "Loom-Up" A column of smoke indicating the presence of a fire.
- "NAV" Not Available for response. See CAV
- "Plug Buggy" A full sized pick-up truck used for utility work.
- "Size-Up" A verbal "picture" of an incident that tells,"I’m at.....I have....,I need..."
- "Task Force" Basic work group of the LAFD-Consists of a Truck Company and two-piece Engine Company.
- "U.S.A.R." Urban Search And Rescue.
